Countdown to the Basque Ultra Trail Series 2017
The Basque Ultra Trail Series (BUTS) is an extraordinary challenge for ultra-distance mountain runners, combining endurance, strength, and breathtaking landscapes. Launched in 2017, this four-stage race circuit covers 500 kilometers across the Basque Country and Navarre, with over 24,600 meters of positive elevation gain. From the rugged terrains to the majestic peaks, the BUTS circuit is designed to push athletes to their limits while celebrating the beauty of the Basque region.
The first edition of the Basque Ultra Trail Series kicked off in February 2017, and participants were ready to take on the legendary course inspired by the March of the Four Cathedrals, a historic trek undertaken in 1953 by mountaineer Sheve Peña.
The modern-day challenge aims to unite the three Basque capitals — Bilbao, Donostia (San Sebastián), and Vitoria-Gasteiz — along with Pamplona in Navarre, through a series of races that combine difficulty and natural beauty.
Event Overview
The Basque Ultra Trail Series consists of four ultra-marathons, spaced throughout the year, offering athletes an opportunity to experience the best of the Basque landscapes. Each race is run in a semi-autonomous manner, where runners rely on aid stations but must be self-sufficient in between.
Stages and Dates of the 2017 BUTS Series:
- February 24-26: Bilbao–Gasteiz (110 km, 5,400 m elevation gain)
- May 5-7: Gasteiz–Pamplona (130 km, 5,700 m elevation gain)
- August 4-6: Pamplona–Donostia (120 km, 6,600 m elevation gain)
- October 6-8: Donostia–Bilbao (140 km, 7,200 m elevation gain)
This combination of races challenges participants with both physical and mental endurance. With a mix of rugged trails, steep ascents, and unpredictable weather, the Basque Ultra Trail Series is a journey of perseverance.
Race Structure and Legacy
Inspired by Peña’s historic trek, the BUTS has cemented itself as one of the premier mountain ultra-racing circuits in Europe. The races are held across all seasons, each offering unique challenges, from snowy peaks to warm, sunlit trails.
Additionally, the first two stages (Bilbao-Gasteiz and Gasteiz-Pamplona) provide qualifying points for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), one of the most prestigious ultra-trail races in the world. Completing both stages earns runners a total of 10 points toward their UTMB qualification.
